AMD officially launches HD 7970 - First 28nm GPU in the world!

It is here! Just like they promised, AMD has made the HD 7970 official, which makes it the first ever 28nm-based graphics card in the world. The card, based on the ‘Tahiti’ core will benefit from the all new GCN (Graphics Core Next), which should ideally improve the performance significantly over the previous architecture. As far as we know, this is their flagship card and will be available for purchase as of January 9, 2012 for a recommended price of $549 (approx Rs.30,000).

The specifications are similar to what we reported a couple of days back. The card features 2,048 Stream processors and 128 Texture units. The core is clocked at a pretty high 925MHz, and the 3GB GDDR5 memory sits at 5,500MHz (effective speed). The card will also run on the new PCIE 3.0 interface, which is found on the new Intel X79-based motherboards. Feature wise, it only supports DX11, not DX11.1 like we though it would and Shader Model 5.0. The new architecture also supports up to 4K video resolutions through the HDMI 1.4a port and DisplayPort 1.2 HBR2.

AMD is quite brave with one of their marketing slogans, which reads, “Engineered to humiliate the competition”. Given that we are yet to see what the competition will bring (Nvidia’s Kepler GPU), we just hope for AMD’s sake, they’ve done enough to come out on top. According to preliminary reports floating around the net, the HD 7970 appears to be quite faster than the GTX 580, which makes it the fastest single GPU card. We’ll bring forth the play by play, as soon as we get a sample in our hands. Stay tuned.
