YouTube star deaf hear the sounds of the future

Sarah Churm is unlikely Internet star. The Texas stays at home mother of two girls has something ordinary interest - she likes reading, watching movies and attending concerts with her husband of nearly 10 years, Sloan.
But on 26 September this year, Churm was catapulted to fame thanks to YouTube intimate film, home to spread. She was born deaf. But that day, he heard his own voice for the first time. The video clip of 91 seconds brought the viewer goose bumps, tears and empathy for this extraordinary woman.
When I interviewed Sarah Churm Sloan and doctor's offices in San Jose, California, she explained that the deaf community tends to fall into two categories: those who want to use technology to recover their hearing and trying to make the most of life without him. She is very firmly rooted in the first camp and has spent much of his adult life investigating the recent hearing devices enter the market. In May 2011, Churm heard a radio ad for the implant sent doctors estimated. That set the ball in motion for a summer full of hope, frustration, excitement, and ultimately success.

Implants estimates are approved by the FDA and a cost of $ 30,000 by ear. Until now, insurance companies do not cover the device or surgery, because they see it as more of a cosmetic procedure. But Churm and her husband could not be dissuaded, and even considered selling organs on the black market to get money for the device. That's when Sloan's mother intervened and decided Churm withdraw money from a retirement fund for Sarah could have the procedure performed in one ear. In August, surgeons implanted a listening device in his skull estimated. Seven weeks later, has been activated and your voice is heard for the first time.

Since the YouTube video and was spread over eight million visitors, the Churmans have appeared on the "Today Show", "The Doctors" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
They are happy to be part of the media circus to get attention for the success of the estimation of expected insurance companies to pay for them someday. It was while Sarah Churm was a guest on "Ellen", she learned that the doctors sent is reimbursing his mother-in-law for the first $ 30,000 and now cover the estimated cost of the second device, that it is thinking of having implemented this spring.
Despite the recent media attention, Churm is a discreet woman, gentle and humble in describing his voice sounds like a "palette." Unlike many of the deaf, his speech is almost flawless, despite never clear herself while growing audience. It's something she attributes to the deaf school and his love for the English language and grammar. Now that you are fully able to participate in life, for her, the simplest of sounds that brought the greatest joy: the voices of his daughters screaming, the sound of rain on the roof, and the singing of the birds in your garden. When going to a movie, she no longer has to push her husband to catch up on the dialog box. At concerts you can actually move your body to a beat. Small things she never did and never take for granted.
