The daguerreotype, named after its designer, of course managed to successfully reduce exposure time for pictures from hours to about 20-30 minutes. Together with his partner in the process, one Nicephore Niepce, they created the first of its kind photography that was permanent, it was also called a Heliograph. The process involved exposing silver-coated copper plates to iodine and then obtaining silver iodide. This was later exposed to light for several minutes then the plate was coated with mercury vapor, heated to 75 degrees celsius and finally the image was fixed in salt water to produce a permanent image.

So on his 224th birthday, we celebrate the man who helped refine the art of photography to what it is today.
