BlackBerry PlayBook goes out of stock in India following discount, RIM extends the offer by another week

Looks like RIM is having a great start to the new year, at least in India. Following the massive price cut the Canadian company is having a hard time keeping the PlayBook in stock thanks to the great response from the customers.
As you may know, RIM announced a major price cut at the end of December that was to last till the end of the year. The prices for 16, 32 and 64GB models were slashed to $199, $249 and $399 respectively in the US but similar prices were found in other markets as well. After the price cut, and perhaps due to the limited nature of the sale, there was suddenly a large number of buyers for the tablet that was till now gathering dust on the shelves, with most of the retailers in India going out of stock within a day or two. In fact RIM sold over 12,000 units in the country in just four days after the sale was announced.
Looking at the incredible response, RIM has now announced that they will be extending the offer for another week. The prices will remain the same as before, that is INR 13,490 ($252) for the 16GB model, INR 15,990 ($299) for the 32GB model and INR 24,490 ($458) for the 64GB model.
Having bought one myself, I can say that for the price it is a good deal. Don’t expect much in terms of apps, though, but for web browsing and media consumption, the PlayBook is good enough.

Kindle Fire and Nook Color get ICS (CM9)

We reported earlier this week about the Motorola DEFY and the DEFY+ getting an early experimental build of Ice Cream Sandwich. Though it was working, there were a few bugs, which meant that some hardware aspects of the phone weren’t fully functional. Now, the Kindle Fire and the Nook Color have received their early versions of Ice Cream Sandwich. The experimental build is out on the XDA Developer’s forum and the version for the Nook Color can be downloaded from here.

It’s a Cyanogen Mod, so the installation is quite meticulous. If you’re an inexperienced user, you might want to wait a while before trying out the early Android 4.0 version. Also, there are a few aspects in both the devices that don’t seem to be working. There is no sound or video support currently for the Color, whereas Bluetooth and few other issues are currently under works for the Kindle Fire. The download for the Kindle Fire is available here.

$1.7 Million worth of BlackBerry PlayBooks stolen!

RIM has just suffered a great loss, no wait, a small loss when a truckload of BlackBerry Playbooks worth $1.7 million were stolen. This probably won’t impact the company too much given they the $485m hit they took in sales over unsold tablets earlier this month. A semi-tractor trailer was transporting 22 pallets of the tablets from the Bright Point Distribution center in Plainfield to Ontario Canada.
April 19th, here I come!
April 19th, here I come!

Officer Mike Milbourn stated that the heist took place when the driver pulled over at Pilot Travel Center off State Road 67, in Chesterfield, Indiana for a pitstop. After returning an hour later, he found his truck missing. Oddly, the truck did not have any GPS tracking device onboard which makes it even more difficult to track it down. The police are looking for clues from the surveillance footage from the truck stop and the FBI have also stepped in to crack this.

Obviously, the thieves who stole the truck didn’t know about the contents, else they wouldn’t have bothered. It will be tough to move this kind of quantity around the gray market so the jokes on them really.

Intel to join the smartphone gang with 'Medfield' in 2012

Boom! Out of nowhere, Intel decides to step into the smartphone market, next year with their spanking new Medfield chipset. Till now, ARM has been the crowd favourite for every manufacturer, including Apple and Nvidia and this simply doesn’t fly well with Intel. While Intel have managed to produce some good, low-powered chips, like the Atom series, they weren’t power efficient enough to work on a mobile phone, which needs to run at least a whole day before trips to the charging point.

Intel just can't stand not being in the limelight, can they?
Intel just can't stand not being in the limelight, can they?

Medfield is designed as an SoC (System-on-Chip), just like ARM-based chipsets, so the entire system is on a single die, which not only makes the chips smaller in size, but also more power efficient. By how much? That’s something we’ll have to wait for. At CES 2012, Intel should demo their prototype phone, built using Medfield. It’s an Android smartphone about the size of an iPhone 4, but should be a lot lighter. It’s also said to have fast web browsing and a ‘burst mode’ for the camera that can capture 15 still shots per second, all at 8MP.

What does this mean for us consumers? Well, more choice, of course. Intel certainly doesn’t have it easy though as ARM, Samsung and Nvidia will all be unleashing dual-core and quad-core chipsets, making the competition fierce.

Amazon tablet may be hot holiday gadget

Fire tablet Kindle might be the best-selling gadget this holiday, pushing profit margins of Amazon.com Inc., but giving the world's leading Internet retailer potentially millions of new customers with high purchasing power. From Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the tablet to a lower than expected price of $ 199 on 28 September, some analysts have increased their sales estimates for the device. Amazon has 95,000 pre-orders fire on his first day and had an average of 20,000 a day since then, email monitoring eDataSource company estimated. The device ships November 15.
Technology blog AllThingsD reported October 6 that Amazon is selling more than 25,000 fires a day, citing unnamed sources close to the company. "The numbers are rumored by the network are too low," said Mark Gerber, an analyst at Detwiler Fenton & Co. "very strong pre-orders and the amazing price of $ 199 means it will easily become five million units this quarter. "Gerber is expected Amazon to sell tablets 3-4000000 fire in the fourth quarter. Amazon declined to comment. However, Gerber and other analysts will be watching closely for clues on the orders of the tablet when the company reports results on October 25. The company is expected to make a profit in the third quarter of 24 cents per share on revenue of $ 10.93 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I / B / E / S.

Pedro Rojas, head of gdgt. com and co-founder of gadget sites Gizmodo and Engadget, hopes the Kindle fire is hottest product this holiday season, ahead of Roku boxes TV, and the new Canon PowerShot S100. $ 199 Fire means that people who already have more expensive iPhone Apple will buy the device as a second tablet to his family, said Rojas. "A lot of people started having more than one computer at home in recent years and cheaper netbooks met this need perfectly," Rojas told Reuters. "The fire Kindle could meet the demand for a second tablet." Other buyers will be people who do not like Apple or passed on buying an iPad, as it was too expensive, said Rojas. "They have been waiting for the iPad alternative to leave and never did," said Rojas. "Amazon was played smart - just enough dissatisfaction out there with iPad alternatives."
Apple iPad has created a new segment of the PC market and now Amazon has created a new market segment of the tablets, according to field Sunday, a partner at The Boston Consulting Group and author of a recent report on the market the tablets. "Our research suggests that $ 199 is the price the American mass market was looking for in a tablet," said Field. "This is the point where it goes from being a phenomenon of great success for the first in the consumer market." Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, recently raised its estimate for sales of five million units fire in the fourth quarter from a previous forecast of three million dollars. It was initially a problem with the supply of sample for the device, but this has been corrected, said Kumar. "They're priming the supply chain for this to be a very successful product in a lot of Christmas trees this season people," he said. Colin Sebastian, an analyst at RW Baird, has published an estimate of fourth quarter sales of three million tablets of fire, but said five million units are possible if Amazon keeps the production, transportation and other bottlenecks.
Initially, sales of Kindle Amazon Fire dent profitability, in part because the company is selling the device at cost or even a slight loss. Dan Geiman, an analyst at McAdams Wright Ragen, Amazon expects operating profit margin to fall to 1.5 percent in the third quarter from 3.5 percent a year earlier. However, getting the tablet into as many hands as possible can drive higher sales and profits in the Amazon in the coming years, Geiman and others said. The fire Kindle comes with a month of Amazon Prime free and the device are expected to encourage more customers to register for the service. The premium service costs $ 79 per year in the United States and includes two days free shipping on eligible purchases from Amazon.
It also gives members free access to instant streaming of more than 12,000 movies and TV shows. Amazon has more than 12 million customers in the first and buy the products at least three times after registering for the service, according to estimates by ChannelAdvisor, a provider of software that helps retailers sell online. UBS analysts Brian Pitz and Brian Fitzgerald estimated that members of the first increase in purchases of five to eight times a year or more after joining. ChannelAdvisor Amazon expects to sell more than five million tablets of fire in the fourth quarter and more than 20 million next year. UBS analysts estimated that sales have been more conservative. But if half of Kindle users register for the first fire, Amazon could end 2012 with more than 20 million "heavy-spending" subscriber of the Government, they said.

The $46 Android-running Aakash is the cheapest Tablet in the world

The “$35 tablet” activity has assuredly started address bake-apple as today the aboriginal Datawind-made slate was announced. Called Aakash, the slate in fact costs $46 dollars, runs on Android 2.2 Froyo and comes with a 7″ arresting touchscreen.
The aboriginal copy of the Aakash book will be alone bogus for the Indian government (which affairs to deliver it to acceptance about the country) and comes with a absolutely bashful 366 MHz CPU, but packs a committed GPU.

The accessible RAM is 256 MB and there’s aswell a microSD agenda aperture and two USB ports on board. The 2100 mAh array central the Aakash slate should action amid 2 and 3 hours of ability autonomy. The antecedent adjustment for that one is for 100, 000 units, with the absolute assembly accepted to ability several million.
The aggregation promises that a retail adaptation of the slate will appear up in November. It will appear with a added abundantly aural 600 MHz CPU and will amount $61.
Both Aakash versions will appear with a 12 ages backup warranty, but abominably neither will accept admission to the Android market. The architect has appear up with its own app repository, but we are yet to see if that is any good.

India's lowest price 35$ tablets tomorrow launching 11/4/2011

We've been advertisement on the development of India's acutely low-budget tablet, back the alpha of 2011. It seemed like the accessory that the HRD ministry, with HRD minister, Kapil Sibal had appear over a year ago, died a quiet afterlife as not abundant was heard about it afterwards the antecedent buzz. Just to accord you quick 'blast from the past' this was the acclaimed $35 (Rs. 1,750) book that was appear with Android on lath and able with appearance that manged to cover Wi-Fi and billow accumulator in the low price. Now, according to an Economic Times report, the activity has been resurrected, so to speak, and will be clearly launched tomorrow - 5th of October, 2011.

Directed at the students, in particular, the book – a abstraction of the HRD abbot Sibal, and technologists of IIT Rajasthan will go up for auction throughout the country. It should be in the spoitlight already again. Let's achievement it has abundant to break there this time.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal with the tablet
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal with the tablet

Although, the book is appointed for a barrage tomorrow, $.25 about its basal functionalities accept already been accomplishing the rounds. Other than Wi-Fi connectivity, the awning admeasurement still charcoal unclear. If we were to yield a agrarian assumption and anticipation from the pictures, we'd appraisal this to be a 7-inch arresting touchscreen with a stylus hidden somwhere on the body. In accession to 256 MB of RAM and 2GB of centralized accumulator there's abutment for 32GB added via microSD cards. They've even managed to bandy in a brace of USB ports. The bargain tablets would be bogus by a UK-based company, alleged Datawind that brought us the PocketSurfer, a while aback that didn't assume to accomplish abundant of an impact.

Interestingly, while the book is getting priced at a simple Rs. 1,750 for colleges beyond the country, according to the report, the accomplishment costs itself, go up to a acceptable Rs. 3,000. That sounds a bit off. However, back the bargain book is a allotment of the government’s abundant beyond aggressive plan – to accompany in advice and technology assets to the apprenticeship anatomy - the butt of this accomplishment and sales arrears will be subsidized by them. The ‘retail price’ of the tablet, however, charcoal to be a mystery. The aforementioned address from ET aswell agitated the quotes of the arch controlling of the aggregation authoritative the device, Suneet Singh Tuli, who said that the book would amount as abundant as “a vegetarian meal for two at a best auberge in Delhi”. The address added states that the government had initially planned a $35 laptop, but during the advance of its conception, they absitively to go in the book direction.

All of it looks acutely promising, but a little harder to accept accustomed that so far the cheapest tablets still amount a little over Rs. 7,000. But, we won't accept to delay too continued to see what affectionate of official amount tag this accessory will appear with, so break tuned.

The Samsung Galaxy Note phoneblet benchmark

So, it’s actuality – it because we’re still not absolutely abiding what to alarm the Samsung Galaxy Note. It’s too big to be a phone, a 5.3″ is absolutely a bit bigger than even the 4.65/4.7 inch screens we’ve been seeing lately.
bigpic The Samsung Galaxy Note phoneblet takes on our benchmark course
It’s not absolutely a “tablet” either – the Note could be acclimated as a buzz (it looks a little awe-inspiring but…) – but it absolutely packs the processing ability and awning acreage of a tablet. The 1.4GHz dual-core CPU akin to a Mali-400MP GPU showed a lot of affiance in aboriginal benchmarks.
We’re harder at plan on a added absolute examination for you guys, but the aboriginal affair we did as anon as we accustomed it, is put it through it paces and see how it fares. We let it diaphoresis in our accepted accumulation of benchmarks, to see how the Exynos chipset performs afterwards the clockrate acceleration bang (we’re acclimated to the one in the Galaxy S II, which is clocked lower).
Quite unsurprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy Note aced the CPU-specific exams – Linpack and BenchmarkPi. Linpack abnormally admired the college alarm acceleration and acquaint after-effects about 20% college than the Galaxy S II.

Moving on to NenaMark 2, the Galaxy S II gets to accumulate its acme here, but you accept to accumulate in apperception that the Galaxy Note has about 2.6x the amount of pixels that the S II has. In added words, a 46% lower anatomy amount is in fact faster than we expected. The LG Optimus 3D wouldn’t run that benchmark.
gsmarena 001 The Samsung Galaxy Note phoneblet takes on our benchmark course
Finally, we ran SunSpider – the accepted JavaScript benchmark. Samsung accept optimized the software absolutely able-bodied but the added bit of accouterments beef shows in this analysis too. It’s not abundant for a apparent improvement, unless you put the S II and the Note ancillary by side, but there is a difference.
gsmarena 004 The Samsung Galaxy Note phoneblet takes on our benchmark course
The Galaxy Note is added ambitious of the Exynos chipset than antecedent phones – it’s not just the college pixel count, the bigger awning agency you in fact see added detail so it all has to be rendered perfectly.
The Note doesn’t assume to accept any botheration in that administration – it blazes accomplished some of the top end adherent phones and will exhausted a lot of tablets easily down (since they use appealing abundant the aforementioned chipsets as their buzz counterparts). By the way, this is aswell the array of achievement we’ll be accepting from from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 back all the accordant specs are the same.

Samsung announces Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0,Galaxy Tab 8.9

Alright, so the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is not absolutely new as it was appear aback in March forth with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and we accept even done a hands-on with it. But up until now the availability of the book was unknown. Samsung has assuredly appear apple-pie with it though, as you will now be able to get your easily on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 starting October 2, and it is accessible for pre-order appropriate now.
It will be accessible in two models, 16GB and 32GB, with the above priced at $469 and the closing getting $569. It’s not a lot cheaper than the bigger 10.1 model, which costs just $30 added in either anamnesis accommodation and seems bigger amount in comparison.
Samsung aswell appear the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0. Both will be active on Gingerbread 2.3.5, accept Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, 3.2 megapixel camera on the back, VGA camera on the foreground and 8GB centralized anamnesis abundant to 32GB. Only aberration amid the two getting the affectation sizes, with the above accepting a 5-inch Super Clear LCD with 800 x 480 resolution and the closing accepting the aforementioned but in a smaller, 4-inch size.
The Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 will be accessible for pre-order starting September 27 and accessible in food starting October 16. They will be priced at $269 and $229 respectively.

It measures 215 x 132 x 20-22.2 mm and weighs 620g, which is quite a lot for its class. but element-resistance doez take its toll. The device looks a looks a lot sleeker than the now discontinued Galaxy Tab but is not quite in the same league as the Galaxy Tab 7.7 announced at the IFA this year. Hopefully then it should also be a lot cheaper, although exactly how cheap this will be or when it will be launched is yet to be known.

NVIDIA’s Kal-El quad-core chipset promises great power efficiency [because of extra core [

NVIDIA’s Kal-El has a secret – A latest update again came to mobitech blog the quad-core CPU actually has a fifth core, called a companion core. It’s a low-power core that is meant to handle background tasks while the phone is idle (e.g. syncing email, checking Twitter for new messages and so on).
gsmarena 002 NVIDIAs Kal El quad core chipset promises great power efficiency thanks to an extra core
The architecture of the companion core has been designed with power efficiency in mind and its clock speed goes up to 500MHz.That doesn’t offer a lot of performance, but for a lot of tasks you don’t need it – and it manages to offer great power savings.
When you need more processing power, the companion core switches off and the fast (but more power-hungry) cores come out – either one, two or all four of them, depending on how much processing power you need.
gsmarena 001 NVIDIAs Kal El quad core chipset promises great power efficiency thanks to an extra core
The switching between the different modes is handled by the chipset, so there’s no need for modifications to the OS or individual apps – that should make it really easy for manufacturers to switch to the Kal-El platform.
The Kal-El chipset also includes more powerful graphics – the 12 core GPU promises 3x the performance of Tegra 2. If you’re not afraid of geek talk, you can check out the white papers (one and two, PDF) for more details on NVIDIA’s upcoming chipset.
We’ve seen Kal-El run Windows 8 and it promises console-level graphics for Android – the only problem now is that there aren’t any upcoming devices with Kal-El, though there might betablets coming out in time for Christmas (fingers crossed) .
